Chairman's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 2013-2014 IET Surrey season.

I would like to thank the Committee for inviting me to continue in the role as “Chair” of the IET in Surrey for the forthcoming season.

The IET Surrey network has demonstrated its commitment to put on successful events over many years. However, our aim this year is “promoting diversity” in our network and we want to encourage young professionals and women in engineering to join us at IET Surrey. After the success of last year's event, we will again run the Present Around The World competition in May 2014 for students and young professionals , and we are planning more activities; updated details will follow through My Community, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Our aim is to stay “at the top” and we have organized a programme for 2013-2014 to respond to the latest technical innovations. We are delighted to announce that the Surrey Network has just received the IET UK Communities Award for Innovation. This was presented at the 'Communities Together' conference in Glasgow last month, and accepted by Mike Austwick on behalf of the Surrey Network. Our events are free and open to everyone, IET members or not, so please bring along friends, colleagues, and family.

Please note that we are using IET’s “My Community” facility to stay in touch and bring you the most up-to-date information on our events . Please join our “IET Surrey Network” community online as this is our main method of publicizing events and promoting our activities.

This year we are launching a series of IET Surrey Prestige Lectures, similar to the ones held at Savoy Place. They will be held in the main Lecture theatre. Please check online in MyCommunities for further information.
Complementary to the lecture programme, we have increased the number of our Lifeskills Courses to 6, with 2 Professional Registration events; these are now established successful events for younger engineers. Our Retired Members also have a very active programme, details of which are in our 2013-2014 events pages.

Running IET Surrey requires effort, expertise and enthusiasm, and I am glad that Colin Cunningham - Secretary, Ceri Evans - Treasurer, Mike Prewett - Webmaster, Malcolm Dudson, Dave Davies, Martin Butterworth and Nigel Ward will continue to support our activities making sure that we will remain a top class Local Network.

I look forward to meeting you at our events.

Surrey Young Professionals

The Surrey Young Professionals section is made up of young engineers, in both industry and academia. As a group, we organise a number of events throughout the year to bring together the younger generation of engineers and to organise events that are especially of interest and of use to students in their final years of studies, and for young professionals in their early working life. In particular, there is a series of Life-skills presentations, throughout the year, which are of particular value to those at the start of their professional careers.

These are shown in our main events list earlier in this booklet.

Many of you may also be aspiring to get accredited as:
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng);
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng);
  • Engineering Technician (EngTech);
  • ICT Technician (ICTTech)
To help you with professional registration, we organise  sessions where you can ask advisors from the IET, on a one-to-one  basis, to answer everything you wanted to know! There are four of these events planned for 2012-13, details to be announced.

These events are held in the Management School at Surrey University, as are the Life-skills courses.
