Launch of the Smarter Networks Portal
The development of the Low Carbon Networks (LCN) Fund has seen an injection, not only of innovation and research, but one of enthusiasm too, and it has reinvigorated the electricity distribution networks. As part of sharing this work, the Energy Networks Association (ENA) has been tasked by the DECC/Ofgem Smart Grid Forum to manage the Smarter Networks Portal.
What Ofgem and the networks have achieved through the development of the new (RIIO) regulatory framework has been to incentivise innovation. Those who have attended the LCN Fund Conferences over the last two years that ENA organises will have seen the huge talent that exists within the industry and the growth of new and exciting talent coming into it.
Speaking at the LCN Fund Conference in October, Dora Guzeleva, Head of Networks Policy at Ofgem, set down the challenge to the industry to make innovation part of the business as usual. Key to the success of this is the kind of sharing of learning and experiences from the work and research do develop our smarter energy future. Dora will be speaking at the launch of the Smarter Networks Portal on 25 June 2013.
The Smarter Networks Portal acts as a repository for innovative projects, initially focussing on the LCN Fund Tier 1 and Tier 2, Innovation Funding Incentive (IFI) and moving into RIIO with the stated aims of providing an overview of the technical and commercial coverage of current smart grid projects in the UK.
The Portal also provides information to the next round of LCN Fund bids and assistance on tracking progress of projects and promoting the sharing of information and learning.
As of May 2013 the Smarter Networks Portal holds over 500 LCN Fund, IFI & Registered Power Zone projects. By October 2013 the Portal will host interactive Networks Innovation Allowance project registration documents, all distribution, gas and transmission IFI projects and more.
