17.09.14 | High throughput satellites

Speaker: Dave Davis MBE, CEng, MIET
Senior Systems Engineer - iDirect
Organiser: James Checkley

Lakeside Restaurant, University of Surrey
7pm for networking and 7.30pm start

Learn about the latest revolution in satellite technology. High throughput satellites (HTS) are already delivering massive increases in capacity and changing the way data is delivered over satellite. Discover what differentiates an HTS satellite and how it works; what's changed over the years and how this impacts on other technologies such as mobility, cellular and broadcast communications. Gain an insight into satellite broadband communications and find out how HTS stacks up against existing satcom solutions and competing terrestrial communications.

Our speaker, Dave Davis, served in the Army with the Royal Signals from 1988 to 2003 and his first experience with Satcom came when he was involved with Hurricane Andrew in the Caribbean in 1992. His military service continued in Bosnia and then as an instructor. Since 2004 he went on to join NSSLGlobal and is currently is a defence and security specialist at iDirect, a company that is actively engaged in many HTS projects as the preferred ground segment provider.

This is the first event of our 2014-15 season, and you may register on this link.

19.06.14 | A fitting end to the 2013-14 season
                 at Guildford

The BT lecture, held in the main lecture theatre, went down very well yesterday despite conflicting with the world cup with good attendance. This showed the main theatre off to its main advantage of offering great AV systems allowing BT to show examples of BT Sport live as well as some good video clips including a time lapse film of how the new studios in Stratford were built. There will be more from BT in the next seasons programme.

"The presentation delivery was very good with slides and video clips and some insight into what oges into a successful project" NM

"An excellent lecture with impressive A/V." CE

"Very interesting and well conducted lecture with many facets of the television production and distribution process constructed in just a short span of time" PC

"Very well organised. Most interesting subject, well presented and explained." BC

" Simply an excellent presentation with all of the questions answered in detail." JP

" A thouroughly interesting presentation given by two bright young engineers. the number of questions asked at the end for me showed the level of interest there was. Excellent!" PM

The first IET Surrey network event of 2014
on the development of 5G mobility turned out to be a huge success for the capacity audience who braved a wet night to visit the University of Surrey on January 15.

Feedback to the lecture by Professor Rahim Tafozolli, Director of the Centre for Communications Systems Research and the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey received high praise for content and presentation.

22.11.13 | First Surrey prestige lecture -
                Signalling modernisation right on track

On Wednesday 20 November, we held the first in a series of IET Surrey prestige lectures in the main lecture theatre of the University of Surrey.

Not even a cold and wet night could halt what was a successful evening to mark the start in a new venture for IET Surrey.

Our subject was the huge challenges facing the Great Western mainline in paving the way to full resignalling and overhead electrification of the route from London Paddington to Bristol and onward to South Wales.

Our speaker, Peter Martell CEng, FIRSE, Route Asset Manager (Signalling),from Network Rail, explained the huge and complex project before taking lots of probing questions from the audience approaching 100.

Because we are attracting larger numbers we are now selecting some lectures for the main theatre which provides raked seating and better audio visual effects, so often complained about when using Lakeside
.

Chris Shilling has asked 'A friend's son is in his last year of school and very keen to get into electronic engineering. He's been accepted at University of Surrey, but is looking for opportunities to get some work experience before then. I wondered whether there is anything available through the IET that he could pursue? Any help would be very much appreciated'.
