19.05.14 | Lifeskills - Effective negotiation
6.30 pm (Refreshments from 6 pm), Room 32MS01
Business School, University of Surrey Guildford GU2 7XH

Negotiation is not only used for business purposes, it is something we do all the time. For example, we use it in our social lives perhaps when agreeing a time to meet. Sometimes negotiation is seen as a means to benefit ourselves rather than both parties and is therefore open to misuse. This workshop looks at the process of successful negotiation and how to achieve a win/win situation.

21.05.14 | Vantage Power catches the bus
The hybrid London bus has arrived

7 pm for 7.30 pm, Lakeside Restaurant
Rik Medlik Bldg. (BSOM), University of Surrey Guildford GU2 7XH

Speaker: Alex Schey and Toby Schultz - Vantage Power
Organiser: Mike Prewett for IET Surrey

Alex Schey and Toby Schultz raised many eyebrows in 2009 when their innovative and exciting Racing Green Endurance project saw the world's longest range electric car tackle the 26,000km Pan-American Highway. The project was a huge success, and the lure of building on this experience by starting a company proved stronger than the need to find a job, and so they set up Vantage Power in January 2011.

But it took until November 2011 for another innovative business idea to take off. It was to design a commercially viable hybrid bus engine that could retrofit into existing buses, thereby allowing operators to save £25k a year in reduced fuel consumption and 40% emissions - all with the buse they already owned.

Our young entrepreneurs will explain the engineering story behind the project and the huge potential it offers on improving environmental, social and economic benefits.

18.06.14 | The June IET Surrey Prestige Lecture
BT and sport - the perfect match

7 pm for 7.30 pm, Main Lecture Theatre
Rik Medlik Bldg. (BSOM), University of Surrey Guildford GU2 7XH

Speaker: James Pearce and Andrew Thomas  - BT Sport
Organiser: Mike Prewett and Jonathan Wood for IET Surrey

In June 2012 BT won the rights to show 38 premiership matches live on TV beginning in August 2013. This resulted in the creation of BT Sport.

For the second of our prestige lectures for this season, we are delighted to welcome James Pearce and Andrew Thomas from BT Sport. James and Andrew will give a camera to TV set overview of how BT Sport is delivered and present some of the technical challenges that were overcome in very short timescales including the creation of a new TV studio and the launch of new TV delivery options.

For sports fans and those with a technological interest in the emergence of BT Sport - considered by many in the industry as one of the most engaging and trailblazing success stories of 2013 - it promises to be a great evening and certain to attract a large audience.

Feedback to the lecture by Professor Rahim Tafozolli, Director of the Centre for Communications Systems Research and the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey received high praise for content and presentation.

22.11.13 | First Surrey prestige lecture -
                Signalling modernisation right on track

On Wednesday 20 November, we held the first in a series of IET Surrey prestige lectures in the main lecture theatre of the University of Surrey.

Not even a cold and wet night could halt what was a successful evening to mark the start in a new venture for IET Surrey.

Our subject was the huge challenges facing the Great Western mainline in paving the way to full resignalling and overhead electrification of the route from London Paddington to Bristol and onward to South Wales.

Our speaker, Peter Martell CEng, FIRSE, Route Asset Manager (Signalling),from Network Rail, explained the huge and complex project before taking lots of probing questions from the audience approaching 100.

Because we are attracting larger numbers we are now selecting some lectures for the main theatre which provides raked seating and better audio visual effects, so often complained about when using Lakeside
.

Chris Shilling has asked 'A friend's son is in his last year of school and very keen to get into electronic engineering. He's been accepted at University of Surrey, but is looking for opportunities to get some work experience before then. I wondered whether there is anything available through the IET that he could pursue? Any help would be very much appreciated'.
