Technical Talk: Electrical Protection & Safety – General & Case Study with Water Heater
TOPIC 1 : Electrical Protection & Safety – General
Speaker: Mr. Dahari M. Siran
Nowadays, electricity has become essential for a household and we duel with electrical equipment every days including Fans, Lights, and Air Conditioning etc. The electrical current in regular businesses and homes has enough power to cause death by electrocution. Even changing a light bulb without unplugging the lamp can be fatal because coming in contact with the live part of the socket. Therefore, necessary protection shall be applied in design to protect life and damage of property. During the talk, Mr. Dahari highlights some definition in protection and introducing the standard that applied. He then will explain how overcurrent could be happened in one circuit which is overcurrent and fault current. He will also describe the function and the principle of Miniature Circuit Breaker in details. In other hand, he will explain the Residual Current Devices and the wiring regulations. About the symbols, marking and the type of Residual Circuit Device (RCD). And the principle and the application of the RCD including the discrimination between devices will be described.
TOPIC 2 : Electrical Safety & Protection – Case study with Water Heater
Speaker: Mr Tee Tone Vei
The recent electrocution via water heater accident in Mont Kiara had made electrocution nearly an annual event in Malaysia. Despite the efforts of manufacturers and government authorities in implementing various safety measures to protect millions of water heater users in Malaysia, these cases still happens. Unlike other electrical appliances, water heater is one of the few devices that we often use in wet condition. Hence, exposing ourselves to the risk of current leakage. Also, due to the high frequency usage of this device in home, it shall deserve more attention on its plumbing and electrical design for our own safety or future consultation purpose.
In order to prevent such tragedy to happen again, this technical talk shall discuss on
· What actually happened
· What could have caused the accident, and
· What can be done in future to improve the safety of water heater.
The speaker shall elaborate on current water heater safety feature and point out some shortfalls in either design or regulations for improvement purpose.
