Pittsburgh-Researchers previously have shown that a depth camera system, such as Kinect, can be combined with a projector to turn almost any surface into a touchscreen. But now researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have demonstrated how these touch-based interfaces can be created almost at will, with the wave of a hand.

Film-maker, Alexis Kirke has made Many Worlds, a film that watches audience members as they watch it, allowing them to influence the sequence of scenes as the film unfolds.  For the technology to work, the filmmaker requires four volunteers from the audience to be attached to sensors. One viewer's heart rate will be monitored, another's brain waves will be tracked, a third's level of perspiration will be observed, and the final volunteer will have a device strapped to their arm to measure muscle tension.

Researchers at USC have developed a new lithium-ion battery design that uses porous silicon nanoparticles in place of the traditional graphite anodes to provide superior performance. The new batteries — which could be used in anything from cell phones to hybrid cars—hold three times as much energy as comparable graphite-based designs and recharge within 10 minutes. The design, currently under a provisional patent, could be commercially available within two to three years.

An augmented-reality app that "translates" grown-up newspapers for children has been developed in Japan. The Tokyo Shimbun, one of the country's biggest daily titles, has worked with advertising firm Dentsu to create the AR News software. It allows children to hold a smartphone over the newspaper to see a child-friendly version of the text.

Virgin Group Chairman Richard Branson is seen dangling on a rope to unveil the Virgin Mobile logo in Mumbai Virgin Media has confirmed it is in talks over a possible takeover by US cable giant Liberty Global. It is thought that Liberty Global could make a bid within days for Virgin Media - Britain's second biggest pay TV company behind Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB, with almost five million customers. Liberty Global has pay TV operations around the world and is the largest cable operator in most of its 11 European markets, including Ireland.
