Endangered rhinos in Kenya are being monitored with the aid of several Raspberry Pi computers. The bare-bones machines are controlling cameras to help form a cyber 'safety net' watching remote areas of the Tsavo National Park. The cameras will help rangers keep an eye on regions they do not usually patrol to spot rhinos or poachers. Images grabbed by the gadgets will be uploaded via satellite and available to anyone via a mobile app.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has released downloadable software to make it easier for users to get started with the device. "The Raspberry Pi is a great platform if your parent is an engineer or you have a teacher who is an enthusiast, but if you don't have a tech-savvy adult to hand it can be quite a technical operation," Mr Upton told the BBC." Noobs (New Out of the Box Software) comes as a compressed zip file that can be downloaded to a SD card. Some say that this is 'dumbing down' the Pi, but what do you think? University of Manchester scientists have come up with a unique deterrent for hungry dieters – a talking, tweeting chicken guarding their cupboards. The chicken, which not only barks out orders to sneaky snackers, but even tweets that person’s Twitter account to publicly shame them if they stray, uses a Raspberry Pi – a tiny, single-board computer.

The Raspberry Pi computer has sold more than 1 million units since its launch in early 2012. Developed by the UK-based Raspberry Pi Foundation, the credit-card-sized PC took less than a year to reach the milestone, having gone on sale last February.
