January 2013
A Message From The Chairman

2013 has brought a new structure to our Local Network. The MFI continues as an e.V. for IET members and anyone else interested in technology and engineering, while the Local Network will continue to represent the objectives of the IET and to operate within the framework of the IET's charitable remit. There is, of course, much overlap in these two models and I believe that we will all benefit in the long term.

Right now, however, the Local Network committee has been cut back to five volunteers. We intend to concentrate our activities for 2013 in Bayern, Nordrhein-Westfalen and Baden-Württemberg, which together account for 69% of IET membership. In spite of “overlooking” over 70% of the Bundesrepublik our LN will still critically depend on your support. Even if other commitments don’t allow you to volunteer on a regular basis, please feel welcome to join-in ad hoc.

What is there to do? I believe the Internet and the MyCommunity site have great potential for networking and for exchanging knowledge – ok, nothing new in that revelation, but I want to see how far we can push them in our LN. In fact, I believe the exchange of knowledge within the very communities within which we have chosen to make our homes will be the main feature of the coming year. I am personally dismayed by the inadequacy of the technology and engineering frequently offered in support of somebody’s favourite conviction. Maybe, as professional technologists and engineers, we can tighten-up some of the arguments, but without arguing in support of either side.

The IET is keen to encourage innovative thinking from communities – please join me and my fellow committee members in making 2013 an innovative year for our LN.

If you are interested in assuming an active role within our LN, please contact me via MyCommunity.
