IET Formula 24 Challenge

IET Ireland Network is supporting the Maynooth Post Primary School entry to the IET Formula 24 Challenge which requires secondary school students, guided by teachers and an industry mentor, to design, build, manage, fundraise and then race a single seat electric car in an endurance challenge with limited fuel over a lapped course.  The Maynooth Post Primary School entry to the 12-16 year category was launched at The Department of Electronic Engineering at NUI Maynooth on 18th February.

PATW Ireland National Final

The National Finals of the Present Around the World competition run by the IET Ireland network were held in the Alexander Hotel, Dublin 2 on 27th March 2014. This is the 3rd successive year that the competition has been run in Ireland and once again, the standard was exceptionally high. PATW provides a platform for young engineers and technologists to showcase their presentation skills to their peers and industry over ten minutes on a topic of their choice.

Entrants from UCD, DIT and NUI Maynooth competed for the chance to represent Ireland at the EMEA finals which will be held in Dublin later this year.

Lots of interesting 'slides' covering an array of topics, including power system operation, health and safety management systems, and harnessing human generated kinetic energy were capably presented in an informative, yet entertaining manner. The judges including pitch coach Andrew Keogh (Aristo), Dr Eoin Kennedy (EirGrid) and Pearl O'Rourke (IET/DIT) who was also last year's winner, had an unenviable task to try to select a winner.

Matthew Flood (UCD) emerged as champion in a very tight competition after delivering a presentation on  "Engineering the Brain" which gave detailed insights to current and future developments in the field of brain interfaces and decoding our thoughts.

Second place went to Alexander Kulesh (UCD) who spoke about Ireland's renewable power portfolio and the potential to export surplus renewable generation to Great Britain.
